  • Rashida Jones describes how her late father was ‘nocturnal’ when he was composing music
  • Quincy Jones passed away on Monday, aged 91
  • “He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius.”

Rashida Jones has paid an incredibly touching tribute to her late, great father, the iconic Quincy Jones, who passed away on Monday at the age of 91.

The legendary music producer and composer, who won 28 Grammys, an Emmy and Tony Award along with receiving seven Academy Award and four Golden Globe nominations, was widely regarded as one of the most important figures in music history, producing a litany of seminal albums and soundtracks during an enormous career.

From Ray Charles to Aretha Franklin to Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson to Donna Summer, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and so many more, Jones was an unstoppable force of nature when it came to producing classics.

A pioneer and a visionary, Quincy Jones’ work defined cultures or, as his daughter Rashida Jones more accurately describes it in her tribute to her father on Instagram, he shifted cultures.

Posting to her 1.9 million followers, Jones said of her ‘culture shifter’ father…

“My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life. He kept “jazz hours” starting in high school and never looked back. When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music). He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me.

“He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius.

“All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love. He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy.

“I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.

Rashida co-wrote and directed the documentary ‘Quincy’, about her father’s breathtaking life story and his work, for Netflix in 2018. The documentary won the Grammy Award for ‘Best Music Film’ the following year.
