There is a famous slang term in the UK for being drunk – ‘getting ratted’ – but in India, the term has taken on a literal sense as a rat has been arrested by police in India for allegedly emptying 60 bottles of illegal liquor.
In Madhya Pradesh, local police had stashed a haul of 60 bottles of illegal liquor in their station, but when they came to get it to present in court, they found it had all gone. Police have attributed the mysterious disappearance of the alcohol to rats, who live in the old warehouse building, and, it is thought had gnawed through the plastic bottles, causing the liquor to run out.
To help back up their claim, police have apprehended what they believe to be one of the culprits – presumably he had ingested too much of the liquor and wasn’t fast enough to escape – and are now keeping it in a cage and plan to take it to court as evidence.
Apparently, this isn’t an isolated incident at this warehouse as delinquent rats have also gnawed through bags of cannabis that have been seized by police and kept as evidence. So big was the problem that local cops have taken to storing cannabis in strong tin boxes to prevent the sharp-teethed and clawed rodents from getting into it. They have also taken to storing important documents at height out of the way of the rats.
