He may be one of the biggest names in rock and roll of the last 30 years, but Noel Gallagher was still a complete stranger to Robert De Niro when the pair met in 2016. And almost 10 years later, the two-time Oscar winner has still never listened to a note Gallagher has written.

Nine years ago, the Oasis guitarist shared a post to his Instagram account detailing a dinner with De Niro at what is believed to be U2 frontman Bono’s house in the south of France. Alongside a picture of the pair at the house, Gallagher wrote the caption, “So we’ve been down to The South Of France for a few days and at a 17 hour lunch at our friends house THIS..THIS.. Actually happened!!!”

Having shared the picture of himself and De Niro, Gallagher would then go onto tell the full story of their lengthy dinner on talkSPORT. The High Flying Birds man revealed that he asked De Niro a ton of questions about Goodfellas and Raging Bull among some of his other favourite films. However, when it came to his own career, Gallagher admitted Oasis were not on the radar of Robert De Niro.

When De Niro left, he turned around to Gallagher and said, “write down the name of that band that you were in again”. However, during a recent interview with NME, the Godfather II actor explained that he had still never listened to any of Gallagher’s tunes.

Despite not being able to sing along to Champagne Supernova, The Masterplan or Slide Away, De Niro said he was still familiar with the story of the Gallagher brothers and their recent reunion, which will see them undertake a lengthy world tour this year.

“I heard about it through a friend who knows him,” the 81-year-old revealed. “He said that they were getting back together and it’s a big, big deal.”

De Niro was promoting his latest film, gangster epic The Alto Knights, directed by Sam Levinson. The film opened to a poor showing at the box office, however, and hasn’t fared too much better with critics, scoring just 37% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
