- Writer and star of Deadpool trilogy reveals he is working on new content
- Says he doesn’t think Deadpool will join the Avengers or X-Men
- Deadpool & Wolverine was second biggest film of 2024

The Merc with the Mouth will be returning! Ryan Reynolds has revealed he is writing something new for Deadpool, which asks questions of his future in the MCU.
After the success of last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which was the second-highest grossing movie of the year globally behind Inside Out 2 and is now the biggest R-rated movie of all time – there has been speculation about the future of the character in the MCU.
This speculation increased after Deadpool was not included in the huge Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement recently. Although this doesn’t mean conclusively that Wade will not be making an appearance in the film, it is known that the event didn’t feature the complete cast list.
Deadpool in an ensemble
But now Ryan Reynolds, the writer and actor behind Deadpool has revealed a little about the future for the character, but it asks more questions than it answers.
In an interview with Time, Reynolds said he is back to writing for the character. “I’m writing something right now,” he said. “It’s a little ensemble, but I like that he’s isolated.”
Reynolds also revealed that the character won’t be joining a superhero team any time soon. “If he becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end,” he said. “That’s his wish fulfilment, and you can’t give him that.”
While Deadpool won’t be joining a team, that isn’t to say he might not team up with another MCU hero. Fans of the comics will know that he has teamed up with various heroes over the years to successful effect, including a long history of working with Spider-Man to defeat a range of enemies.
Where would this fit into the MCU?
While Reynolds stayed tight-lipped on the details of what he was writing, it nevertheless gives fans a tease that the fan-favourite character will return in the MCU.
A return has been seen as inevitable given the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which saw the foul-mouthed fighter make his entrance into the MCU, having had two successful movie outings previously for Sony.
But where a new movie would fit into the MCU schedule is unclear. There are two big Avengers event movies coming, plus Spider-Man 4 by the end of May 2027. There is also Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2 in the works. Avengers: Secret Wars is set to end the Multiverse Saga, so it is likely that any new movie would be released after that.
