Saquon Barkley has enjoyed a dream debut season in Philadelphia. And the 28-year-old running back and his Eagles teammates ensured that dream did not turn into a nightmare in New Orleans, last night. Barkley not only helped the Eagles lift their second Super Bowl, but he also made history doing it.

The former New York Giant has spent the entirety of the 2024 season running clean through the defences of the NFC. In that time, before Super Bowl LIX, Barkley had amassed a monumental 2,447 rushing yards. Just 29 yards short of the record set by Terrell Davis.

And, even with a relatively quiet game by his imperious standards, Barkley still comfortably shifted Davis into second place, recording a further 57 yards in the Eagles dominant 40-22 destruction of the Kansas City Chiefs. The victory not only earned Barkley a place in the record books on an individual and team level, but it also prevented the Chiefs from becoming the first team to produce a three-peat of Super Bowl victories.

Barkley finished the season with 2,504 total yards rushing and 18 rushing touchdowns. Not bad for a free agent.

Speaking to the Associated Press, who recently named Barkley as the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year, the running back said, “Hell of a year, right? I couldn’t do it without the big boys up front, everyone on this team. I just appreciate them – the whole Eagles organization. Of me being a newcomer, welcoming me in with open arms and helping build confidence back in me too. That was definitely helpful.

“It was a hell of a year, but all of the numbers and stats or records are cool, but the best thing is to be able to hold that Lombardi Trophy.”

Barkley’s debut season at Lincoln Financial Field will see the 28-year-old go down as one of the greatest free agency signings of all time. And will also be a source of much pain and woe among the front office of the New York Giants organisation.
