It’s been a dramatic few months for Shawn Mendes.

The singer, 26, found himself a hot topic in August, when Sabrina Carpenter’s much-anticipated sixth album was released.

Rather than the songs be about her current beau, Barry Keoghan, as fans and critics expected, the pint-sized pop star, 25, appeared to hint at her short fling with Mendes in many of the tracks

With Taste – which is currently sitting at the top spot of the UK charts – Coincidence, Sharpest Tool and Dumb & Poetic all appearing to reference their brief romance, Mendes has been keeping a low profile… until now.

Fans will know that Carpenter hints at the overlap between her and Mendes’s ex-girlfriend, Camila Cabello.

And on the Jay Shetty podcast this week, the Treat You Better vocalist opened up about his relationship with the Havana singer, 27.

“Honestly, I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other,” he explained. “Because no matter how strong mentally you are when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it and to be swayed by it and to be inspired by it.

“[Social media] is honestly too detrimental to the actual relationship itself that I’ve become pretty strict on that part of it. We’re not in a movie. This is not a movie… This is real life. This is real love and love is confusing and hard and goes through dips, goes through pauses, goes through breaks.”

Mendes continued, “I’ll be the first to text her. She’ll be the first to text me. So as long as we’re good, all the noise is just noise,” he said, adding of respecting one another in the media, “I don’t think either of us would ever cross a line. We deeply respect each other.

“I’m just lucky she’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly understanding and thoughtful and caring.”

Mendes expanded even more on his comments when the interview was released.

When one Twitter/X user commented “they don’t play about each other” on a clip of the interview, Mendes confirmed, “No, we don’t.”

How did Camila and Shawn get together?

First linked in 2014, Mendes and Cabello didn’t make their relationship public for another five years, when they were spotted kissing in a cafe.

The pair continued their relationship for another two years – but then in a joint statement on November 18, 2021, the pair announced their split.

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the former couple shared on their Instagram stories. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward. Camila and Shawn.”

However, on April 23 last year, Mendes and Cabello were seen locking lips at Coachella festival. Fans were overjoyed by the reconciliation, but it wasn’t meant to be, and Cabello went on to speak about their attempt to get back together on the Call Her Daddy podcast.

“It was a fun time, it was a fun moment,” she said.

Sooo… what does Sabrina have to do with it?

Well… Mendes was also linked to Carpenter around this time.

In February 2023, they were spotted on a date together, looking “verrrry comfortable”, and were then seen strolling around LA together just over a week later.

In March, the pair left Miley Cyrus’s album launch party together – and by the 13th of that month, a source had confirmed, “Shawn and Sabrina are seeing each other. They have been hanging out a lot and trying to keep things low-key. They were at a birthday party together a couple weeks ago and were cute together. Shawn is happy.”

While they may have been trying to keep things casual, fans were quick to notice that Mendes had been wearing a necklace featuring Carpenter’s birthstone for three months.

But on March 17, four days after the album launch party, Mendes revealed that he and Carpenter “were not dating” – and, of course, the infamous Coachella pics surfaced the next month.
