  • First movie adaptation for massive selling life simulation game
  • Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, will produce the film
  • Loki’s Kate Herron on board as co-writer.

The Sims has been delighting gamers for well over 20 years now and, given the success of big screen franchise conversions in recent years – think Sonic and Super Mario and the upcoming Minecraft film – it was perhaps inevitable that a studio would turn their attention to the Sims.

Step forward Margot Robbie. Fresh from her success starring in and producing Barbie, LuckyChap, the production company she runs with Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, has confirmed it is bidding to bring The Sims to the big screen.

Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment are also on board as producers. Electronic Arts, the publishers of The Sims, is also involved.

In addition, Kate Herron – best known for directing season one of the MCU’s Loki – is on board to co-write the script alongside Briony Redman.

The Sims has been a stable of the video game world since it was first released in 2000. The game, where players simulate life for the characters they control – through everything from relationships, to jobs, to the mundane everyday tasks as making dinner – has long taken weeks from players who get immersed in the Sim world. It is famed for not often having any defined goals for players to achieve, as well as for the ‘simlish’ language that the characters speak in.

Since its first release, a multitude of expansion packs and sequels have been released to keep things fresh – the latest being The Sims 4: For Rent in December 2023. To date, The Sims has sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.
