- Sonic The Hedgehog 3 director teases that it might reveal a new character
- Shadow was teased at the end of Sonic 2, setting up the third film
- Sonic lore means there are plenty of characters to choose from

Fans are excited for the forthcoming release of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 – but now the movie’s director has teased more new characters could be unveiled at the end of it.
Teasing characters
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jeff Fowler talked about the potential future for the hugely successful franchise. This included enjoying seeing fan debates about who might crop up next. “It’s fun to see the fan debates online abot who’s coming up next,” he said. “It is fun to keep that anticipation. This movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters.”
Fowler pretty much saying that viewers need to watch right to the end to make sure they know who could be appearing next.
This device has been used at the end of both movies so far to set up important plot points for the next movie. At the end of Sonic The Hedgehog, Tails was glimpsed, while at the denouement of the sequel, Shadow was seen. It was later revealed that Shadow will be voiced by Hollywood legend Keanu Reeves.
But who could the mystery character be? Sonic The Hedgehog has lore and characters dating back more than 30 years across games, comics and animated shows so there are no shortage of candidates. Here are some of the favorites:
Amy Rose
Amy Rose – a pink, female hedgehog – has been in Sonic since 1993. Amy is a tomboy as well as being driven and competitive. She is also Sonic’s romantic interest – of sorts. Sonic is usually obvious to her feelings. She is one of the favorites as, thus far, the film franchise hasn’t yet introduced any female characters.
Silver
Silver is, as the name suggests, a hedgehog with silver fur. The character in the main timeline comes from 200 years in the future, sent back to destroy Sonic. His main ability is telekinesis.
Metal Sonic
Metal Sonic has been one of Sonic’s main enemies for many years, having first appeared in Sonic The Hedgehog CD in 1993 and in various games and animated series since. Essentially an evil robot version of Sonic, although he does have things like a laser cannon and jet engine, which his spiny nemesis doesn’t. In the lore, he was created by Dr Robotnik/Eggman, which gives him an easy potential genesis in the films.
Orbot and Cubot
The two hapless hench-robots of Dr Robotnik/Eggman have appeared in animated incarnations of Sonic, as well as in games, but have yet to make it to the movies. The bickering bots usually provide comic relief rather than much in the way of a threat.
Of course, this is speculation, as we haven’t had confirmation that a fourth film has been greenlit yet. Whether it will be will likely be decided by how Sonic 3 fares at the box office. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 sprints into theaters on December 20.
