Audiences may just be getting to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but already fans know that there is already a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie in the works.

Variety broke the news that Sonice the Hedgehog 4 had been officially confirmed to be in the works, although it had rumored that another film was planned for some time.

Indeed, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s director, Jeff Fowler, has previously hinted that there could be another movie on the way. He said he enjoyed the speculation from fans about which character would appear in the post-credit scenes – and that this film was no different.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 coming

Paramount, the studio behind the Sonic franchise, is evidently confident about its future, as the third film is expected to be a success and top the box office in North America this week, according to Variety. It has also received a positive response from critics, including 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

There are no official hints yet as to the plot of the fourth movie, but it is likely that the post-credit scenes in Sonic 3 – it has been confirmed there is more than one – will set up a couple of major plot points. This could include a new character arriving – as has happened at the end of the first two films.

Initial misstep

While the Sonic franchise is set to be an ongoing success, it could have been an almighty failure. When the first trailer for the first film dropped, fans were horrified at how Sonic looked and it was predicted to bomb on release. This version of Sonic – since named ‘Ugly Sonic’ – was revised by the studio to what we see on screen today, paving the way for its success, according to Ben Schwartz, who voices the blue blur.
