Steven Spielberg has confirmed that he is involved in the Ready Player Two film – the sequel to the hugely successful Ready Player One – but will be a producer, rather than directing.

Speaking to Showbiz 411 at the Universal Pictures gala after the Oscars earlier this week, Spielberg gave an update on his upcoming projects, including his role as producer on Ready Player Two.

Ready Player One grossed more than $607 million at the box office when it was released in 2018. The sci-fi film, which starred Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance, among others, told the story of a future where people use a virtual reality game called the OASIS to escape reality and Wade Watts’ quest to inherit the creator of the OASIS’ fortune. It was known for its liberal use of pop culture references.

Ready Player Two will be based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, which was published in 2020. It was announced that the film adaptation was in development soon after the book was published, but details of production have been generally thin on the ground since then.

If the plot of the film follows the book, it will focus on Wade Watts, who, after gaining control of the OASIS, discovers a new headset that takes control of the user’s mind and gives real world sensations inside the OASIS. In it, Wade finds a new quest to follow and he and the rest of the High Five, set out to find the answers.

However, there is no indication as to when Ready Player Two will hit cinema screens. Indeed, Warner Bros has yet to officially green light the film, so it is safe to assume we won’t be seeing it for some time – but Spielberg’s involvement does indicate that it will make it to screens eventually.
