  • Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted he could be involved

Squid Game’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has given an update on the English-language remake of the hit K-drama.

Talk of David Fincher – who previously worked on House Of Cards and Mindhunter – helming an English version of Squid Game first emerged a couple of months ago. Now, it seems it’s coming closer to fruition – and Hwang may be involved.

“I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away,” Hwang told TheWrap. “Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe.”

Fincher’s version of the show is rumoured to take place in the US. However, more specific details have not yet been confirmed.

Squid Game’s English connection

The South Korean series already has a connection to England and the English language. Fincher’s proposed series isn’t the show’s only spin-off either – there is also Squid Game: The Challenge, which was filmed in the UK. Amazingly, it offers a similar scale to the original show, assembling 456 players for the game – the second largest TV cast in history.

The first season of Squid Game: The Challenge aired in late 2023. A second season of the spin-off, in which real-life players participate in versions of Squid Game’s challenges (that don’t involve them being killed), has already been greenlit.

When can we expect Squid Game season 3?

The team behind Squid Game have already confirmed that the show’s third season will be its last.

Although there was a three-year wait between the show’s first and second seasons, there won’t be such a big wait for the next one. This is because the second and third seasons were shot back to back.

As such, we can hope to have Squid Game season 3 on our screens sometime in 2025.

“At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious,” Hwang told Variety. But what I can say is, after Season two launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season three soon.”

As for when season three might come out, Hwang said: “I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
