- Original 1985 film has become a cult classic
- Claims have been made that a sequel could be released in 2026 or 2027
- Some original cast members have cast doubt on the claim

Hey you guys! There are claims that sequel to cult classic movie The Goonies is in the works, but two of the original stars have cast doubt on this.
Beloved cult classic
The original film, released in 1985, has become beloved by successive generations. But now, nearly 40 years on from its release, it has recently been reported that sequel ideas are being discussed, with the aim of releasing a new film in 2026 or 2027. In addition, it rumored that many of the original cast members are set to return.
The Goonies focused on a group of friends in Oregon who try to save their homes from foreclosure and follow a treasure map to try and find a long-lost treasure – that leads them to danger. It starred many who went onto be stars, such as Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin and John Brolin.
Various news outlets reported that plans are in place to discuss ideas in 2025, with production starting after that.
Doubts
However, some doubt has been cast on the rumors. The Daily Mail in the UK has revealed – through an unnamed source – that neither Astin nor Feldman have been asked to return. In addition, Feldman posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the rumors aren’t true. “I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORX”
Rumors of a sequel have cropped up periodically. Steven Spielberg, who produced the original film has previously said conversations have been had about it, and ideas discussed but they haven’t got off the ground as they haven’t found an idea that was better than the plot of the original film.
The rumors about a Goonies sequel are understandable given the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel made some 35 years after the original film, which again included many members of the original cast.
