Student accommodation is not known to be luxury, but do you expect mushroom growths to be coming out of the wall when you move in? That is exactly what one student shared – an entire clump of mushrooms growing from one of the walls in the university accommodation’s shared bathroom.

Worse than toilet skid marks.

On Reddit, the student posted the photo of the gross growth to the subreddit R/mildlyinfuriating and wrote, “Found this growing in my university shared bathroom! The growth spans around 4-5 inches. Does anyone know what it is and if I will be dying???”

If only they had an Eight Ball to help answer that question.

But seriously, the disgusting post went viral and currently has over 77,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments on the social media site.

Stay tuned for the full story here.

What is the story behind the gross growth found by the student?

Naturally, that kind of growth would worry any sane person, but everyone knows Reddit is not a serious site.

One of the top comments read, “Would hate to see inside the walls…”

Us too, how gross.

Meanwhile, another joked this was the beginning of The Last of Us. Let’s hope the original poster is Ellie then…

More interestingly, a self-confessed “mycology nerd” chimed in on the growth in a lengthy comment.

On the thread, they said that the mushrooms, known as ink caps, are not going to “hurt” the poster. However, the ink caps being there means there is “severe and extensive water damage” in the bathroom walls.

The user also said, “The mycelium of the fungus (a very fine rootlike structure that actually comprises the majority of the organism, just out of sight) is having a field day eating away at your walls as they rot from the inside”.

Advising the original poster, the user told them to contact the building management about the water damage. By assessment, the original poster said the damage looked so bad it could result in “tearing out large sections of wall”.

Yikes.

Other commentators offered suggestions, with one suggesting letting the biology department at the university investigate it. Maybe it would make a fun workshop?

Others continued to joke, with one user dubbing the picture “Bathshrooms”.

Alright, that is punny.

Later, the original poster said they had complained about the horrible conditions. Oddly, they also said they have cleaners in the building every day, so it is a mystery why they aren’t tackling the shroom infestation.
