With filming for The Conjuring: Last Rites having wrapped, here is all we know about the final movie in the hit horror series.

For more than a decade now, the fictionalised adventures of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren -played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga – have been scaring audiences, but that time is nearly up.

Final film

The Conjuring: Last Rites has already been confirmed as the last in the hit series. This will be the ninth film in the Conjuring Universe. It began in 2013 with The Conjuring, and then the universe has expanded with The Nun films, as well as the Annabelle series.

However, while it may be the final film, a spinoff TV series is in the works for Max. The series will take place after the chronology of the movies and will explore stories that would be better served over eight episodes rather than a two-hour movie, according to producer Peter Safran.

Star goodbye

It would seem that The Conjuring: Last Rites will also be the final time we see Ed and Lorraine Warren. A post on Instagram by Farmiga hints that she won’t be playing the character again.

Alongside a picture of Farmiga alongside Wilson as Ed and Lorraine on their wedding day, she wrote: “Roundabout 5,000 days ago, this guy and I signed a WB contract and said ‘I do’ to embodying Ed and Lorraine Warren. Today, he wraps. I have another 12 hours of laughter and insanity with him and then abruptly, he will walk off set, peel off swaet-soaked demonologist garb, shave off his side burns, flash that dazzling smile and bid our fake marriage adieu.”

This would seem to indicate that the TV spinoff series will not feature either of the two principle characters from the movies.

Plot

Details of the plot have been scarce so far, other than it will look to wrap up the Warrens’ story and it is a sequel to 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

Scariest film

The Conjuring films have become firm favorites among movie goers over the past 11 years. Indeed, a recent Pubity poll rated The Conjuring as the scariest of all time. Pubity’s knock-out tournament of scary movies received over 6.7 million votes. However, it was The Conjuring – inspired by a series of terrifying real-life paranormal events – that emerged victorious by earning 53% of the votes.

William Friedkin’s infamous horror classic The Exorcist was the beaten finalist, attracting 47% of votes.

When can I see The Conjuring: Last Rites

The Conjuring: Last Rites will be in theaters on September 5, 2025.
