Dust off your ‘World’s Best Boss’ mug because a new The Office spin-off series is in the works.

First released in 2005, America’s version of The Office was developed by comedy maestro Greg Daniels. Having worked on shows like The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live, he decided to do something that many thought was impossible. The goal? Try to translate Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s hit show for American viewers.

The gamble paid off. With Steve Carrell as loveable idiot Michael Scott, Daniels’ take on The Office was a massive hit. It ultimately spawning nine series and ran until 2013, gaining worldwide acclaim.

Cut to 20 years later and The Office continues to be one of American television’s most beloved modern hits. With that in mind, it’s not too surprising that a spin-off series is in the works.

Before you start worrying that your favourite show is about to be ruined, you’ll be pleased to learn this new series is in good hands. Daniels is once again at the helm, creating a show that is in the same universe as Scott’s beloved paper merchant Dunder Mifflin.

With The Office spin-off series coming our way (that’s what she said), here’s everything we know about what it’ll entail.

When is The Office spin-off series released?

At the moment, The Office spin-off series is without a concrete release date. However, when it is ready to view, fans will find it on the US streaming service Peacock.

While unconfirmed, it’s likely UK viewers will be able to access the show via Sky or apps like Now TV or Hayu. Both regularly air much of Peacock’s NBC content.

That said, this isn’t guaranteed. Until an official release strategy is confirmed, we won’t know for sure how viewers outside the United States can tune into The Office spin-off series.

Is there a trailer for The Office spin-off series?

The Office spin-off series will follow a new group of employees at a branch of Dunder Mifflin that has seen better days.

As the show’s official synopsis explains, “the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

Daniels once again returns to oversee the series, having helped translate Gervais and Merchant’s original show for American viewers.

Daniels will be joined by fellow writer Michael Koman whose previous credits include work on Nathan For You and Late Nite with Conan O’Brien. Meanwhile, both Gervais and Merchant will return as Executive Producers.

According to Variety, Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor Domhnall Gleeson and The White Lotus season 2 star Sabrina Impacciatore will lead the new show. However, details of their characters remain under wraps for now.

Shorty afterwards a new batch of stars were confirmed, including Tim Key, Eric Rahill. Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman and Ramona Young.

In November 2024, details were confirmed about the show’s guest stars. These were Saturday Night’s Tracy Letts, Dad Jokes star Mo Welch, Last Man Standing’s Molly Ephraim, Billions actor Allan Harvey and Loot’s Duane Shepard Sr.

They’ll be joined by Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Nate Jackson and Veep’s Nancy Lenehan although character details for each actor remain a mystery.

Will Steve Carrell be in The Office spin-off series?

Unfortunately, Prison Mike will not be reappearing in a branch of Dunder Mifflin any time soon. Carrell confirmed that Michael Scott will not be joining The Office spin-off series back in early 2024.

“I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character [Michael Scott] to show up in something like that,” Carrell told The Hollywood Reporter during the red carpet event for his movie If.

“But I’m excited about it,” he continued, “it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads; I did [2022 series] The Patient with him and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it’ll be great.”
