The Oscars is almost upon us and there is so much news! On 27 February some interesting news came out that this year’s ceremony would play James Bond music. Classic and sultry have been a staple of the James Bond universe for years but at the Oscars? Well, there is a reason behind it.

Variety reported that the inclusion of James Bond music at The Oscars this year was to honor two producers. The Oscars are known for honoring those who are late and great in the film, including producers and actors. Leading the nominations for this year’s award ceremony is Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations, Wicked and The Brutalist are tied with 10.

There has been some controversy around this year’s Oscars. Leading lady Karla Sofia Gascón faced online cancelation when her old posts on X resurfaced, including one where she called co-star Selena Gomez a derogatory name. The posts caused internet users to demand she not attend any upcoming award shows, despite her nomination for her role in Emilia Pérez at many shows.

However, controversy is not the topic of today. Today we are here to talk about why the James Bond music is being used in this year’s Oscars to honor some producers. Keep reading to find out about the tribute.

Who is the Oscars honoring with James Bond music?

According to the Variety article, “The ceremony will perform a special tribute to the iconic songs of the James Bond franchise at Sunday’s Academy Awards.” The tribute is intended to honor producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Both producers received an Honourary Oscar at the previous Governors Awards.

What isn’t known is will the tribute focus on the producers’ contributions to Bond, or will they focus on the wider history of the franchise. In total, there are 25 Bond films each with a theme song.

Sources said to Variety that it would include an “assembly of surprising and immense talents.” However nothing has been said about the structure of the tribute yet, and nobody has been named in them. The Academy Awards haven’t commented on the matter yet.

How are Broccoli and Wilson involved with James Bond?

Broccoli has been a long-time producer of James Bond movies. She started as a producer on the 1977 Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me which starred Rodger Moore as Bond. She worked on the most recent Bond movie starring Daniel Craig, No Time To Die, which came out in 2021. The producer was only 17 when she began working on the Bond franchise! Broccoli is now 64-years-old!

What about Wilson?

Wilson like Broccoli has been working on the James Bond franchise since the 1970s. He joined the production company Eon Productions in 1972 which produced Bond. Just as a note, Broccoli is his half-sister! His first work was in a small role working as an assistant on The Spy Who Loved Me. His first notable work as an executive producer for the James Bond series was on the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only which also starred Moore.

Who could perform in the James Bond tribute?

Speculation about who could perform is up for debate. As we said, this could depend on the structure of the tribute, but here are some potential candidates.

  • Shirley Bassey, who sang Moonraker the theme song for Moonraker (1979) and Gold Finger for the movie in 1964
  • Madonna, who sang Die Another Day for Die Another Day (2002)
  • Adele, who sang the popular hit Skyfall for Skyfall (2012)
  • Billie Eilish, who sang No Time to Die for No Time To Die (2021)

Other performers who could sing during the tribute are Sheryl Crow, Sheena Easton, and the pop band Duran Duran. A Tina Turner feature would’ve been epic, but Turner passed away in 2023.

No performers have been announced for the tribute yet, but we will be sure to update when they are.
