Hello Redditors! Sydney Sweeney is bringing the world of Reddit to film, as she is set to star in and produce a film about a Reddit story. The viral story was posted to the social media platform in November 2020. The story is titled “I Pretend To Be A Missing Girl” and was posted on the social media site by teacher Joe Cote.

The short story is a fictional story written by Cote. The story gained traction, and Cote was contacted by a Hollywood agent asking him if he wanted representation. He ignored this request but eventually had an “almost quite literally unbelievable” Zoom meeting which ironed out the details.
The project is being made by Sweeney and her production company Fifty-Fifty Films and Warner Bros.
Speaking about the phone call with the agent, Cote said: “It was almost exactly a year ago from now. We were on the phone for a couple of hours, and I don’t think I breathed. I think I got off the phone call and I took a breath, like, ‘Holy crap. What is happening?'”

In 2019, Cote began teaching an elective class and chose to teach creative writing. Under the subreddit R/no sleep stories, he posted the short story.
“‘The comments came in, the likes came in, and even as of right now, it’s still sitting at the top of that short story subreddit. It’s one of the top posts of all time. If you had told me then that it would have been anywhere close to where we are now, I just never would have believed it”,” he said of the story’s success to The Daily Mail.
The plot of the Reddit story
The story is a Gone Girl-style tale about a woman who turns up at the home of a family whose daughter disappeared. Their daughter disappeared on the night before her eighteenth birthday. A drifter impersonates the missing girl, Mikayla Murray, 12 years later after her disappearance. She realizes by impersonating Mikayla she has made a mistake. Originally she intended to rob the family, but she realizes she can’t because of chilling circumstances. Spoiler alert: Mikayla’s brother James is convinced his father killed Mikayla and put her underneath their gazebo in their garden.
Not wanting to be involved with the crime, the young woman lights the gazebo on fire and escapes from the Murray house. Afterward, she realizes she has reopened the mystery of what happened to Mikayla Murray. Cote posted another follow-up update to the story.
