Did we ever think this day would come? Not really. It’s almost as unlikely as Bella Goth coming back, but there is a The Sims movie in the works. The Sims movie was announced in September 2024. Sims developer Electronic Arts confirmed the movie’s existence. Amazon MGM Studios also confirmed that they are developing The Sims movie, with Margot Robbie‘s production company LuckyChap attached.
History of The Sims
The Margot Robbieness of it all aside, The Sims is one of the bestselling video game franchises ever. The Sims spans over 25 years and recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Happy Birthday, Sims!
The life simulation game was developed by video game developer Maxis and was created by Will Wright. Wright had worked on the game development for several years and began working with Electronic Arts on the game when Maxis couldn’t see the game’s potential. Maxis was bought by Electronic Arts in 1997. The base game, The Sims was released in February 2000.
From 2000 until 2004, The original Sims franchise grew with expansion packs for the PC being released. In September 2004 another addition joined The Sims franchise, the sequel game, The Sims 2. This game followed a similar pattern, although more Sims 2 games were released on consoles as well as for PC during this time. In June 2009, a third sequel game was released and in September 2014 a fourth one was released. Recently the first two games were re-released to celebrate the milestone.

No Sims 5 game has been released yet. With the movie confirmed to be in development, Simmers everywhere can’t wait. While everyone is waiting, here is everything that is known about The Sims movie.
What will The Sims movie be about?
The EA Vice President’s comments
Electronic Arts Vice President Kate Gorman gave some hints about the movie and it’s potential direction last year.
Speaking to Variety in 2024, she said: “It’s very much rooted in The Sims universe. And what we want is to have a truly authentic ‘Sims’ experience brought to a theatrical release. So what you’ll see from us is that we have been wanting to get this right.”
Included in the movie from that part will be some iconic Sims lore. Gorman continued, “You will see a lot of ‘The Sims’ universe come to life and you will see a lot of the classic experiences that our players have in the games come to life in the movie.”
What those will include, you ask? Freezer Bunnies and possibly pools without ladders, but details weren’t finalized at the time of Gorman speaking.
The president of EA Entertainment weighs in on the movie
The President of EA Entertainment Laura Miele gave a recent update about the game after a lack of information in recent months in February 2025.
In an interview with CBS Mornings, Miele said: “There’s a great idea, a great idea that celebrates some of the lore and some of the history of The Sims that are fans are going to recognize and be excited about.” You can watch the interview below.
If this is true, then that means the “lore” in question could reference Sims that already exist in the franchise. Some of the most popular characters in the franchise include Bella and Mortimer Goth who have featured in every Sims game. Womanizer Don Lothario who first appears in The Sims 2 and The Landgrabb family also features in some of the console games.
A likely storyline could focus on Bella Goth, who provided all the great lore for The Sims 2. Think missing, abducted, an affair! Soap opera stuff.
Who is starring in The Sims movie?
Since a definitive plot hasn’t been released yet there is no official casting news. Although Robbie’s production company is attached, it doesn’t appear that she will star in the movie. However, it is a possibility – Robbie was a producer on the live-action Barbie movie, as well as the star.

Who is involved in the production of The Sims movie?
A team from LuckyChap is involved, Robbie, Josey McNamara, and Robbie’s husband Tom Ackerley will produce. Also producing is Roy Lee for Vertigo Entertainment. Bringing The Sims onto the big screen is the director of Loki Kate Herron. Herron is also co-writing the movie with Briony Redman.
When will the movie be released?
As of February 2025, there is no release date. The production is still in its early stages and could take years to come to fruition. If the soon-to-be-released Minecraft movie is anything to go by, it could be a while before more Sims-related news comes to us.
