The first trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie has dropped – here is all we know about the much-anticipated sequel coming next year.

When the Super Mario Brothers Movie hit theaters back in April 2023, it was a huge success. The movie grossed $1.36 billion at the global box office, making it one of the most successful movies of the year. So it was inevitable after that success that a sequel would be coming.
While it has been known a sequel was in the works, thanks to a trailer that dropped earlier this week we now know more about what the movie will be about – and the game that it takes as its inspiration.
The trailer has had a positive response from fans so far, who welcome the new characters and where the plot might be going.
Here is all we know about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie:
New characters
The trailer introduces viewers to two new – to the film franchise – characters: Bowser jr and Princess Rosalina.
However, seasoned Mario fans will know both characters well from the games. Bowser Jr is Bowser’s son, and has appeared in various Mario games over more than 20 years. While he is small, he is nonetheless powerful and seems a proper chip of the block as he shares his dad’s desire to rule the galaxy.
Meanwhile Rosalina is a guardian of the cosmos, who was introduced in the original Super Mario Galaxy game. She is also caretaker of the Luma, a star-shaped creature.
Based on famous game
The sequel will take as its inspiration for the main plot the 2007 game, Super Mario Galaxy – which is renowned as being one of the best games in the 40-year history of the franchise.
While the first movie was in New York and the Mushroom Kingdom, the second, as the title suggests, takes place mostly in space, which suggests that it is following the plot of the game.
Plot
The trailer only gives a few hints towards the plot of the movie. In the opening of the trailer, Mario and Luigi meet a tiny Bowser, living in an equally tiny version of his castle, who spends much of his time painting – including a portrait of him and Princess Peach, which Mario says is “trash”.
We also see our heroes travelling through space and exploring various lands, before an encounter with Bowser Jr, who tells the brothers that he wants his father back.
Also introduced is Rosalina – who foils an abduction attempt with her magic wand.
New voice actors
Following the success of the first movie, its no surprise that some big-name actors are coming on board for the sequel. Benny Safdie is voicing Bowser Jr. He is best known on screen for appearances in Oppenheimer, Good Time and Happy Gilmore 2. He has also directed numerous films, including Uncut Gems (2019), which he created with his brother, Josh.
Meanwhile, Oscar winner Brie Larson is the voice behind Rosalina. Brie has long spoken of her love for Nintendo games such as Super Mario – including once evicting a boyfriend from her house because she was so focused on beating the final level – so it is no surprise that once the opportunity arose, she took the chance to join the movie cast.
In addition, the main voice cast from the first movie are all returning, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
When is the Super Mario Galaxy Movie released?
Illumination’s CEO Chris Meledandri said at the Nintendo Direct presentation that the movie is just weeks away from completing animation, which means it is on track for completion in time for its scheduled release. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be in theaters on April 3, 2026
