Anora star Yura Borisov is loving being a hometown hero since his Hollywood breakout.

The Russian actor made his English-language breakthrough in the Sean Baker film as Igor. He loves how important the film is for artists from Russia.

Other stars from his homeland in the movie include Mark Eydelshteyn, Maria Tichinskaya and Aleksei Serebryakov.

“For a lot of people in Russia who work in art, it is a very important moment of our life — all these awards and nominations. A lot of people are very proud. They write me about this and call. I meet someone on the street and every time [they share] how important it is for them,” he explains. “I feel that it’s not mine. Of course it’s happening with me, and with Mark, Maria Tichinskaya and Aleksei. Russian actors,” he told PEOPLE magazine.

The cast also include Mikey Madison, who has also been lauded for her performance as the titular character.

Borisov boasts over 50 credits to his name since his 2010 screen debut.

Borisov gushed about how his loved ones were “crazy proud” of him.

He continued the magazine, “They are so proud of me and it’s most important for me that I don’t need to show them some results for [them to be] proud.”

For his role in the 2024 Palm D’or winner, Borisov has been critically acclaimed.

This praise has not just been on the pages of the trades but in the nomination lists of Hollywood’s most prestigious awarding bodies.

Among these includes his nod at the Golden Globes. His competition was stiff at the January ceremony, and he was beaten out by Kieran Culkin in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.

Recently, Borisov was acknowledged by the SAG Awards. On 23 February, he will go up against Culkin again at the SAG-AFTRA-backed ceremony. The pair are vying against Jonathan Bailey, Jeremy Strong and Edward Norton in the Film Best Supporting Actor category.
