Three people have been charged by authorities in Argentina relating to the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne.

Charges made

Payne, 31, died on October 16 after a fall from a third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.

But following investigations, three people – all currently unnamed – have now been charged with a range of offences over the singer’s death, according to Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office.

One person – who is said to have been accompanying Payne – has been accused of “the abandonment of a person followed by death”. Meanwhile two others – one an employee of the hotel – have been charged with supplying drugs.

Payne shot to fame in 2010 as part of One Direction when they competed in TV show X Factor in the UK. Along with Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles, Payne went on to have a string of hit singles and albums around the world. The band went on hiatus in 2015. Since then, Payne had embarked on a solo career. He had one son, from a relationship with fellow singer Cheryl Tweedy.

Following his death, there were many tributes paid to Payne by friends, family and fans around the world. His former bandmates said they were “completely devastated” by his loss.

Test results

The results of toxicology tests have also been confirmed by the Argentinian public prosecutor’s office. They found traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s body.

Meanwhile a post-mortem examination has given the cause of Payne’s death as ‘multiple trauma’ and ‘internal and external haemorrhage’ brought about by the fall from the balcony.

The prosecutor’s office also said that medical reports have suggested that Payne may have been semi or totally unconscious when he fell. With this in mind, the prosecutor’s office said that Payne did not know what he was doing nor understand it when he fell.

Earlier this week, Payne’s body was released by authorities to his family and flown back to the UK.
