We are now fully into awards season in Hollywood and last night (January 11), the great and the good of the movies and TV industry came together for the Golden Globe Awards.

The Golden Globes are one of the most prestigious acting awards ceremonies, and are seen as a key indicator of who might win an Oscar later in the year.

Last night, Timothee Chalamet walked away with the best actor in a musical or comedy award for his performance in table tennis-based movie Marty Supreme, beating off competition from George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio, among others.

This was Timothee’s first Globes win, having been nominated on four previous occasions. He said that his dad always instilled a spirit of gratitude when he was growing up. “It’s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say those moments make this moment that much sweeter,” he said.

But how much do you know about Timothee Chalamet? Here are some facts you might not know about him.

Timothee was initially rejected for action school

Timothee’s passion for acting was sparked by seeing the late Heath Ledger’s performance as Joker in The Dark Knight in 2008.

Another turning point was when Timothee was accepted into the Fiorello H LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts – a notoriously difficult school to get into. While Timothee was initially rejected due to his record in middle school, it was a drama teacher who saw his audition who intervened. He gave Timothee a five – the highest score – in every category and, on hearing he had been rejected interrupted a meeting of the principal and asked her to reconsider. Fortunately for all of us, she did.

He is a university dropout

After leaving high school, Timothee did attend university, initially studying cultural anthropology at Columbia University. However, he struggled to settle there, having filmed Interstellar not long before. He then transferred to New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, but eventually dropped out to focus on his by then burgeoning acting career and not wanting to be saddled with student debt.

He has an Oscars first

Timothee was the first person born in the 1990s to be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, for Call Me by Your Name (2017). However, he wasn’t the first person born in the decade to be be nominated – that honour goes to Keisha Castle-Hughes, who was nominated for Best Actress in 2003 for the movie Whale Rider.

He is a huge sports fan

Timothee is a huge fan of several sports. For instance, when he was younger, Timothee did dream of becoming a professional soccer player, before acting took over. He is a lifelong fan of French Ligue Un side Saint-Etienne.

Timothee is also a supporter of the New York Knicks basketball team, and attends matches when he can.

He is also known to be a fan of college football and WWE wrestling – he has appeared on Cody Rhodes’ podcast and impressed all with his knowledge of it.

He had a YouTube channel in his teens

Before his acting took off, Timothee also tried to become a YouTuber. In his teens, he operated the ModdedController360 channel, in which he presented Xbox 360 controllers that he had modified by spray painting them. he also tried to build a business out of modding controllers, but only made $30.

The channel wasn’t particularly successful – and it has since been taken down – although some of the videos can still be found if you know where to look.
