Zendaya has been rumored to be in talks to voice Shrek’s daughter in the upcoming Shrek 5 movie – and this could be significant for the plot of the movie.
This week rumors have emerged online that Zendaya could be in line to play a role in Shrek 5.
Zendaya has become one of the hottest actors in Hollywood in recent years, including starring roles in Dune: Part Two and Challengers last year. Given the history and success of the Shrek franchise – and some of the stars who have provided voices for it across the four movies – the rumor is not a surprise.
However, it should be noted that neither DreamWorks nor Zendaya have commented on the rumor, so at the moment it is just speculation.
Possible hint to Shrek 5 plot
But if this rumor does turn out to be true, it could give a significant hint to the plot of Shrek 5.
Shrek and Fiona’s three children were born at the end of Shrek the Third and were last seen as toddlers in Shrek Forever After. But, given the length of time between the fourth and fifth Shrek movies – Shrek Forever After came out in 2010 – it is entirely possible that the creative team decide to move the timeline in Far Far Away along too, meaning Shrek’s kids could be teenagers in this new movie.
If this is the case, it could open up a whole new dynamic in the Shrek world – and plenty of scope to nod to classic fairy stories involving rebellious children.
Again, nothing has been revealed by DreamWorks about what the plot of the movie will be as yet.
Production ongoing
What we do know is that production is going on across this year, according to Eddie Murphy, who is back to voice Donkey again. Last year, he told Collider that he had already started recording his voice parts, and that he would finish them up this year.
In addition, Walt Dohrn is in the director’s chair for this movie, having worked on the writing side on the second and third Shrek films and head of story on the fourth.
It is usual with movies like this that the studio drip-feeds information ahead of the release date to build anticipation so we should begin finding out more confirmed names in the movie soon.
