Kamar de los Reyes gave a memorable performance as Hector Ayala/White Tiger in episode three of Daredevil: Born Again before passing in real life – but who was he?
Episode three of Daredevil: Born Again focused on Matt Murdock’s defence of fellow vigilante Hector Ayala/White Tiger. warning! Spoilers ahead so read on with caution if you haven’t seen it yet on Disney+.
But the drama wasn’t confined to the courtroom – and fans were left stunned at the end of the episode when White Tiger was brutally assassinated. The death will likely set up a key plot line for the remainder of the season as the assassin had a Punisher logo on his chest.
The arrival of White Tiger in the MCU was hotly anticipated as he was Marvel’s first Hispanic hero – and fans wanted to see which iteration of the character would be used.
Who was Kamar de los Reyes
Fans were also shocked to see at the end credits that the episode was dedicated to Kamar de los Reyes, who had given such a memorable performance as Ayala/White Tiger.
Sadly, Kamar passed away on December 24, 2023, aged just 56. He had been suffering from cancer.
Kamar’s work on Daredevil: Born Again was some of his final work in a career that spanned 35 years.
He was born in Puerta Rica in 1967. His father is renowned Cuban percussionist Walfredo de los Reyes Sr, who is regarded as one of the most influential timbaleros players in the world.
Kamar’s brothers, Daniel and Walfredo Jr, are also famed percussionists.
TV and video game career
He first really came to prominence in the US in the early 1990s playing Ray Ariaz in drama series Valley of the Dolls. Then from 1995-2009 he played Antonio Vega in long-running soap opera One Life to Live, which ran on ABC.
Following this, Kamar had guest roles in various high-profile series – such as CSI: Miami and The Mentalist – before playing Jobe for 13 episodes of Sleepy Hollow in 2017. In 2021, he played Ryan Caradine in five episodes of The Rookie, followed in 2022 by eight episodes on All American as Coach Montes.
In later years, Kamar also starred in various video games. From 2012 to 2022, he played Raul Menendez in several Call of Duty games, including Black Ops II and IV
Gamers will also know that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was dedicated to his memory. He played Barranca in that – like Daredevil, it was released after his passing.
