Out of all the outfits on display at the 2025 Met Gala, none were quite as impressive a feat of sartorial engineering as that of Andre 3000.

In other words, no one else turned up to one of the biggest fashion events of the year with an entire piano strapped to their back.

But far from being an extreme tribute to Billy Joel, the Outkast rapper’s choice of fit was a reference to a happening that could barely have been more recent.

The theme of the 2025 Met Gala was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, which ties in with The Met’s spring exhibition, celebrating the history of Black fashion and dandyism. And while many attendees referenced black designers and artists in their outfits, Andre kept his choice closer to home.

Andre’s decision to strap a baby grand to himself was done as a way to tie in with his new seven-song project, 7 Piano Sketches, the cover of which features an illustrated version of the rapper with a piano attached to his back.

Obviously, it should go without saying that the piano was not a real baby grand. We may have been typing up Andre Benjamin’s eulogy were that the case. However, the Steinway Model S baby grand replica was, according to The Cut, a smaller-scale version designed by Pink Sparrow and made of foam, luan, and 3D-printed elements.

In a release on Monday, 3000 wrote, “The original title for it was ‘The Best Worst Rap Album In History’ and here is an excerpt from the original liner notes.

“It’s jokingly the worst rap album in history because there are no lyrics on it at all. It’s the best because it’s the free-est emotionally and best I’ve felt personally. It’s the best because it’s like a palette cleanser for me.’”
