Mexican actor Adan Canto, who was best known for roles in TV show Designated Survivor and films such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, has died.
Canto, aged 42, had been suffering from appendiceal cancer, according to his publicist, Jennifer Allen.
His co-stars have been quick to pay tribute. Kiefer Sutherland, who starred with Canto in Designated Survivor – about a senator who unexpectedly becomes president when the serving president and the rest of Congress are assassinated – said he had “such a wonderful spirit”.
Canto starred in all three seasons of the drama, which initially aired on ABC, before transferring to Netflix, as national security adviser Aaron Shore. Sutherland added: “As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed.”
In X-Men, Canto played Sunspot. Halle Berry, who appeared with him – and later cast him in her film Bruised – said on Instagram: “My dear sweet friend Adan just gained his wings. Forever, forever in my heart.”
Allen also put out a statement, in which she said: “Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever. He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Canto is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann, and two children.
