The man who directed the first three Spider-Man films in the MCU is not involved in the fourth instalment – but has revealed his feelings about the upcoming movie.

Watch as a fan

Jon Watts has said he isn’t involved in the upcoming as-yet-unnamed Spider-Man 4 movie. However, he is nonetheless excited to see what Marvel come up with for the web-slinger’s next adventure.

Speaking to Tech Radar, Watts said: “Honestly, this one, I’m excited to not know anything. I’m just excited to go watch it as a fan again.”

Watts’ absence from the new Spidey movie isn’t a surprise. Earlier in the summer, it was revealed that Daniel Destin Cretton – who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Seven Rings in the MCU – was in the director’s chair for the next Spider-Man movie. It is also known that this new film is seen as moving on from the earlier trilogy, which ended with Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Watts has been keeping busy however, although he has jumped iconic franchises having co-created upcoming show Star Wars: Skeleton Crew for Disney+. The show – set in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian – follows four children who get lost in the galaxy and go on an adventure to return home.

Spider-Man 4 updates

It was only confirmed in October that Spider-Man 4 was definitely happening, following months of rumors. Appearing on the Jimmy Fallon Show, Tom Holland – who had recently said he’d seen a script for Spider-Man 4 that excited him – said that production on the movie will begin next year.

Spider-Man 4 is slated to be released in July 2026, which will be shortly after Avengers: Doomsday lands in theaters.
