Thanos in Squid Game has quickly emerged as a fan-favourite character.

Within director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s new series, Thanos is one of the more colorful and memorable new players. This time around, our season 1 hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) finds himself back alongside players pitted against deadly playground games in an attempt to win a life-changing amount of money.

Once back inside, Gi-hun meets a number of new faces, some of which threaten his new goal of proving to players that money isn’t the answer to life’s problems. Thanos is one such character. With his spikey purple hair and wild attitude, he’s a loose canon.

Behind the scenes, Thanos is played by South Korean rapper-turned-actor Choi Seung-hyun, a star better known by his stage name T.O.P.

After shooting to fame in the K-pop boy band BigBang, T.O.P found success with a solo career. Acting roles in various South Korean movies and TV shows followed. However, it is his role as Thanos in Squid Game that pushed him into Western acclaim.

Whether you’ve yet to finish Squid Game season 2 but need all the information up front or if you’ve finished the show and just want to relive the action, here’s what happened to Thanos in Squid Game season 2.

Warning: Major Squid game season 2 spoilers lurk below…

What happens to Thanos in Squid Game season 2?

When Gi-hun re-enters the Squid Game in episode three, he soon meets Choi Su-bong AKA Player 230. He quickly learns that he is a famous rapper who rose to fame under the rapper alias Thanos.

Thanos has entered the Squid Game because he lost all of his money in a cryptocurrency scam that he was encouraged to be a part of by another player named Myung-gi (Yim-Siwan).

Much like his villainous Marvel namesake, Thanos has his fingernails painted the same colors as the Infinity Stones featured in Avengers: Infinity War and End Game. This makes his hand look like the Infinity gauntlet featured in Marvel movies.

Thanos in Squid Game fate

We soon learn that Thanos has somehow smuggled drugs into the game. After realising that people die when they lose a challenge, he begins taking these drugs to encourage a more wild and carefree way of making it through each task alive. Combined with this, he is also unafraid to put others at risk if it means he will survive.

After each game, players are given the choice to vote on whether to continue playing or leave the game and split their combined winnings. Thanos votes to stay on two occasions. After surviving the third game, another vote is held but this time it is a tie.

Thanos tries to pressure another player, Min-su, (Lee David) into changing his vote from a vote to leave to a vote to continue playing. The scuffle encourages other players to come to Min-su’s defence, including Myung-gi who ultimately stabs Thanos in the neck with a fork after he is nearly strangled by the rapper.

The event ends Thanos’ Squid Game experience.

Will Thanos appear in Squid Game season 3?

Considering his fate in Squid Game season 2, it’s unlikely that Thanos will appear in Squid Game season 2. That said, it’s not impossible.

Seung-hyun’s role has become one of the stand-out moments of the show’s return so a flashback sequence could offer viewers a little more Thanos.

However, it’s worth remembering that Squid Game season 3 was reportedly filmed alongside Squid Game season 2. This means that director Dong-hyuk would’ve been oblivious to T.O.P’s popularity while shooting and presumably seen no reason to include more Thanos in his final batch of episodes.

Either way, we won’t know for sure whether Thanos will appear in future episodes until Squid Game season 3 arrives. Hopefully, we won’t have long to wait.
