The iconic thriller films have mastered the art of delivering shocking, yet ridiculous death scenes that satisfy viewers. Sure, their plots are mostly lacklustre and cheesy but everybody knows that going in. It’s no secret that the deaths are the main reason people watch the films.

Bloodlines will mark the 25th anniversary for the franchise, so we’re going to look at some of the most brutal and unforgettable death scenes – premonitions included – that still make our toes curl.
Lori’s Gory Escalator Ride
We’ve all worried about getting a shoelace caught in the escalators. It’s a relatable fear – but have you ever worried about being pulled under completely and grinded up like minced beef? Because that’s what happens to the unfortunate Lori in The Final Destination.
Lori and her friends are trying to escape a crumbling shopping mall after a series of disasters and she finds herself trapped on a collapsing escalator. As she loses her balance, she gets caught in the exposed grinding gears and sucked in. The machinery consumes her in what is one of the goriest deaths in the franchise.
Candice’s Spine-Splitting Gymnastics
Candice’s shocking death during a gymnastics session is a real edge-of-your-seat moment. It occurs in Final Destination 5. It’s tense – you know it’s coming – and when it happens, it’s unbelievably gruesome.
Candice is performing on the parallel bars. Another gymnast nearby steps on a loose screw, stumbles and causes a plume of dust to hit Candice whilst she’s swinging. As a result, Candice is temporarily blinded and loses her grip. She falls and lands horribly, snapping her spine in half with her legs folding over her head. It’s brutal.
Ashley and Ashlyn’s Toasty Sunbeds
This one from Final Destination 3 is the stuff of nightmares, and it’s a slow burn – quite literally. Ashley and Ashlyn climb into tanning beds, with Ashley leaving her iced drink next to her bed. In the heat, her drink forms condensation drops that drip onto the VAC machine situated below.
It causes a malfunction and the bed’s temperatures skyrocket, essentially microwaving them both alive. The scene drags on, making it one of the most horrifyingly slow deaths in the franchise.
Lewis’s Skull-Crushing Reps
Cocky jock Lewis meets his death in one of the most over-the-top ways in Final Destination 3. He’s working out in the school gym and arrogantly ignores warnings that he’s in danger. He continues to bash out reps and the vibrations cause two decorative swords to fall off the wall behind him.
He boasts that nothing can kill him but the swords slice through cables sending the heavy weights crashing down on Lewis’s head. His head explodes instantly as it’s squashed like a grape.
Tim Goes Splat Beneath Glass
Tim’s death is a sudden one in Final Destination 2. Blink and you’ll miss it. He leaves the dentist with his mother, where he had just experienced a series of near misses with death. Outside on the street, he sees a flock of pigeons and playfully runs over to them. The pigeons scarper, distracting nearby construction workers who are lifting a huge sheet of glass by crane. The workers lose control and accidentally drop the glass on…you’ve got it, Tim. He doesn’t even get time to react and it flattens him to a bloody pulp.
Roller Coaster of Death
Final Destination 3 really played on people’s paranoia with this terrifying opening disaster scene. Wendy and her friends go to a carnival and board the Devil’s Flight roller coaster. Everything that you fear would happen to you on a rollercoaster, happens to them. A loose harness fails to lock properly, a camera falls out of someone’s pocket, jamming part of the track and a hydraulic failure causes the ride’s safety mechanisms to break.
As a result, people are flung off the ride, one person is impaled by a pole and another is crushed between two derailing coaster cars.
Hunt’s Sucked Through A Pool Vacuum
I wonder how many people stopped swimming in pools after this disturbing incident? In Final Destination 4, cocky womanizer Hunt is poolside when he drops his lucky coin into the pool. He dives in to retrieve it, but whilst he swims to the bottom of the pool, a powerful suction pins his buttocks to a drain.
It creates a pressure vacuum so intense that he gets stuck down there and is unable to free himself. Eventually, as the suction intensifies, his internal organs are sucked out of his own behind.
Deathly Logs on the Freeway
Final Destination 2 opened with total carnage on a freeway, complete with explosions and flipping cars. It begins with Kimberly and her friends driving. As they merge into traffic, they end up behind a truck carrying massive tree logs. Suddenly, the chains securing the logs snap, causing the logs to roll off the truck and onto the road.
The first log crashes through a windshield, instantly obliterating a driver’s head and a massive explosion engulfs multiple cars. The scene no doubt made countless people terrified of driving behind logging trucks in real life and remains one of the most memorable death scenes in the franchise.
