There isn’t much that Tom Cruise hasn’t done in Hollywood. He’s mixed cocktails, been a jet flying volleyball enthusiast, gone to some very rogue costume parties one Christmas, undertaken some seemingly impossible missions and was once an absolute nightmare of a passenger for Jamie Foxx. But, according to Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Danny Ramirez, there is one role the legendary leading man has yet to inhabit.
MCU supervillain.
Ramirez was speaking during an exclusive interview alongside Captain America: Brave New World co-star Anthony Mackie, ahead of the latest Marvel blockbuster’s release this week. Between the pair exchanging some absolutely box office dad jokes, the question was put to Ramirez as to how he believes Cruise could potentially fit into the ever evolving, sprawling world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Danny Ramirez Wants to see ‘Conflicted’ Tom Cruise in MCU
“I’d be curious to see how he plays a villain,” Ramirez explains of the four-time Oscar nominee, “because he plays a hero so well, I’d love to see him as a villain. But also, as a hero, a hero villain. A conflicted villain or a conflicted hero.”
Cruise is no stranger to playing sketchy characters, having starred as contract killer Vincent in Michael Mann’s scintillating 2004 thriller Collateral. His vampiric role of Lestat in 1994’s Interview With A Vampire involved significantly less taxis than Collateral, but still displayed Cruise in full blown villain mode, as does his particularly psychotic turn as ponytailed pick-up pervert Frank T.J. Mackey in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. And, lest we forget, his tour de force cameo as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.
Ramirez, who has been cutting his chops in the MCU as Joaquin Torres, initially in the 2021 miniseries The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, is taking on Sam Wilson’s mantle of Falcon in Brave New World, as Wilson ascends to becoming Captain America, leaving Torres to inherit Wilson’s EXO-7 Falcon wingsuit.
Captain America: Brave New World is released in cinemas this coming Friday, February 14.
