Fans of HBO drama The Last of Us are eagerly awaiting season two in April – and it seems like they will have two more seasons to look forward to after it.

The Last of Us was a huge hit when the first season aired in 2023. Based on the hugely popular 2013 video game of the same name, it is set 20 years into a pandemic caused by a fungal infection that transforms infected people into zombies and caused society to collapse.

The show focuses on Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), a smuggler who is tasked with escorting a teenage girl (Bella Ramsey), who is immune to the fungus, across what remains of the US.

Season two debuts in April. This season is set to be partly based on the 2020 game The Last of Us Part II, which is set five years after the events of the first season.

More The Last of Us seasons planned

But while there is plenty to get excited about for fans, they have been given assurances that another two seasons are being planned. Last year, co-creators and executive producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann told Deadline their plan is to tell the complete story of Part II in the TV show, which they estimate will likely take them to season four.

Now, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s EVP, has confirmed that this is the plan for the show. “I think it’s looking like four seasons,” she revealed in an interview with Deadline. “I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.”

However, she did caveat this by saying there is no “final plan” for the show. This leaves the possibility that there could be more seasons after season four.

Season two hints

Orsi also gave a hint of what the second season has in store. “There’s certain elements in terms of the various factions that are competing for survival that reveal themselves as a really intriguing survivalist group, and I think they just have a quality to them that feels distinct in how they present it.”
