A new season of The White Lotus means a new cast, a new location and a new theme tune.

The third season of Mike White’s hit anthology series has begun and this time, he’s taking us to Thailand.

Following on from the first two seasons, the new series has a slightly different theme tune, though with some similarity to the previous ones. Previous theme tunes have been eerie and strange but catchy, particularly the season two theme Renaissance. In fact, it was such a hit that it went viral and made its way onto club playlists.

The music was the work of Chilean-born Canadian composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, who also composed season 3 theme Enlightenment. However, its notable contrast from previous theme tunes has flummoxed fans of the show.

Enlightenment is significantly darker in sound compared to past theme tunes and the central melody that fans found so catchy is present but less obvious. Not everyone was such a fan…

“Mike White’s first miss”

Some fans seemed to be unhappy that the theme tune was changed at all, forgetting that it has changed every season.

Then again, Enlightenment is a larger departure from the other two. Still, it wasn’t quite to some’s liking.

One X/Twitter user described it as “Mike White’s first miss” while another added “all I want in this life is the s2 theme back”.

Check out more reactions below.

Not everyone was so negative, though. One user wrote: “the song they play at the beginning of white lotus s3 is so good omg ive been jamming all day.”
