Happy Gilmore 2 will soon be making its way to Netflix and fans have been left wondering whether it’ll see the return of a classic character from Adam Sandler’s comedy filmography.
To whet our appetite, the streamer dropped the movie’s first teaser trailer. Released in mid-March, it reunites fans with their favorite anger-prone golfer 29 years after we last saw him ripping up the green.

While many plot details are currently lost somewhere in the rough, Happy Gilmore 2 will find Happy (Sandler) after a few years spent away from golfing. “I haven’t swung a club in years…,” he tells us in the film’s first trailer. “I don’t know where to start.”
When he’s finally convinced to tee off once more, he isn’t alone. Joining him is his sports nemesis Shooter McGavin (Christoper McDonald) – the pompous pro golfer who lost to Happy during the Tour Championship back in 1996.

He appears briefly in the trailer yelling at the rain. By the looks of things, he’s seen better days. Elsewhere, the film will also feature the return of original Happy Gilmore stars like Julie Bowen’s Virginia Venit and Ben Stiller’s Hal L although fans are wondering whether Rob Schneider’s iconic “You can do it!” character will be back too.
Here’s what we know.
Will Rob Schneider appear in Happy Gilmore 2?
So far it’s unclear whether Schneider will appear in Happy Gilmore 2.
Schneider has appeared in many different Sandler films. Frequently, he plays a guy named the Townie who is known for shouting the running-gag catchphrase “You can do it!” – usually in the direction of Sandler’s character during moments of doubt.
Currently, the actor remains absent from the Happy Gilmore 2 castlist but that doesn’t mean he won’t pop up in the finished film.
Speaking on a morning news show in June 2024, Schneider jokingly stated that he will be appearing in the movie – just not in a role audiences would be expecting.
“Yes, I will be playing Happy Gilmore. Not Adam ,’ he deadpanned, before adding, ‘No I’m just kidding’”
However, he provided a more optimistic (and serious) answer while speaking to the Mai Morning Crew in 2024.
“Yeah, I’m going to be in that too. I don’t know what but I can guarantee it’s going to be something humiliating for the next 30 years of my life,” he said, responding to how his ‘You can do it” catchphrase has followed him around over the years.
“He’s (Adam Sandler) trying to find something for me,” he added. “He called me and said, ‘what do you think I should do? I don’t know….’ and I said ‘yeah you should do it’. And he said ‘okay I wanna find something for you’.”

Despite being synonymous with Sandler’s filmography, Schneider didn’t actually appear in Happy Gilmore. Instead, his first appearance as the Townie was in 1998’s The Waterboy.
He continued to make brief appearances in other Sandler films including 2000’s Little Nicky, 2004’s 50 First Dates, 2005’s The Longest Yard and 2008’s Bedtime Stories.
The character also appeared in Sandler’s 2006 movie Click but the scene didn’t make it into the film’s final cut.
