- Season two finale airs this week
- Fans are trying to figure out more about Gemma’s back story
- One theory links back to an old episode of The Twilight Zone

Severance is nearing the end of its second season and fans are going into overdrive with their theories surrounding how things will unravel for the Lumon lot, this Friday.
The Ben Stiller helmed series follows the mysterious and unsettling goings on at Lumon Industries, where the all-seeing Eagan family lead a cult-like workforce, some of which have been ‘severed’ so they can maintain seperation between their personal and work lives.
With 14 Emmy nominations earned for its first season, Severance has amassed a dedicated fanbase who have rapidly began piecing together theories for almost every episode. And with one of the biggest episodes fast approaching, those theories have now gone into overdrive. Especially when it comes to the character of Gemma or, as her ‘innie’ is known, Miss Casey, played by Dichen Lachman.
Gemma is the wife of Adam Scott’s Mark, who is believed to be dead at the beginning of the show, but is later revealed to be alive and severed at Lumon. Gemma’s innie is forced to undergo constant experimentation at Lumon, while Mark strives to find her once he realises who Miss Casey is.
WILL THERE BE A SEVERANCE SEASON THREE?
However, if some fans are on the money with their recently revealed theory, then Mark’s efforts may be, heartbreakingly, for nought.
The final episode of the season will be entitled Cold Harbor. But it is the penultimate episode of the season that has a lot of people talking online. The title of the episode, The After Hours – seemingly references an old Twlight Zone episode of the same name – could potentially be a nod towards Gemma’s fate.
Per The Independent, The After Hours is a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone in which a woman, Marsha White, visits a department store to buy a gold thimble for her mother. Marsha is told to visit the ninth floor to purchase a thimble, but when she gets there, discovers that it is only one woman selling one thimble, which she buys.
The thimble turns out to be damaged, but when Marsha looks to return it, she is informed that there is no ninth floor. When Marsha notices the woman who sold her the thimble, she is then horrified to discover the woman is actually a mannequin. Oh, and to make matters way, way worse, Marsha is then locked in the store overnight with a whole host of animated mannequins. Even worse than that? Marsha is also a mannequin and didn’t even realise.
A clip from the episode has since gone viral on social media and has led to Severance fans clamouring for it to be reimagined by Ben Stiller and co.

“So??? Is Gemma not real? A severed innie persona Lumon sent after Mark to begin with?” one fan pondered.
“Oh God…if the twist is the same it could mean that Miss Casey was an innie first and Gemma later and she just forgot she was an innie in the first place. She could be an experiment from the very start, which is why they went as far as to fake her death and recruit Mark to work for them. That would be heartbreaking. It would mean Mark and Gemma’s relationship was manufactured from the beginning,” another fan panicked.
Less than two days to wait until we find out. After another stunning season, let’s hope Ben Stiller sticks the landing and doesn’t ruin the story. And possibly the evening.
