Ben Stiller has moved to reassure fans of Severance that there will not be a lengthy break between seasons two and three like there was with the first two seasons of his hit Apple TV drama.

The second season of the psychological sci-fi show comes to an end today with the finale dropping onto Apple’s platform this morning. However, some fans have been concerned that there could be an extended break before a third season appears on their screens, given the fact there was a three year gap from season one to two.

Season two, however, was actually severely delayed because of the combined writers and actors strikes that took place in Hollywood in 2023 and Stiller – the show’s creator – has now confirmed that there will be no such break this time.

Severance season 3 will be here sooner rather than later

During a recent appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce’s New Heights Podcast, Stiller said, “No, the plan is not to [wait three years]. Hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.

“It took us a little bit to regroup, and the show, we shot for 186 days on Season 2. Editing takes a while, but thank goodness the audience was there when we came back. The challenge was to get people who hadn’t seen the show to watch the first season, so Apple did a really good job of getting the word out and we did as much press as we could.”

In previous comments about a third season, Stiller has mentioned that a writer’s room is currently up and running in Los Angeles, although Apple are yet to officially green light the season. It is expected an announcement will arrive regarding the show’s future in the coming days or weeks, once the dust has settled on season two.

Severance still has a long way to go

This news backs up previous statements made by the star regarding the show’s longevity. According to Stiller, Severance could go on for a long while – as long as people are into it.

“You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it,” Stiller told Collider in November 2024.

“That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to, and Apple’s been really supportive of that and been sensitive to what the story is and not saying, ‘Okay, this is something that has to keep going as long as it’s successful.’

“It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our Season 3 work.”
