Five years passes from the events of the first season to the second. Naturally, a lot changes in that time, some of which is shown in flashbacks during the game.

Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is 19 years old in the events of the second season, which is the same age as Ramsey is now.

According to a synopsis, “Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”

What else do we know about the time jump?

We know that the relationship between Ellie and Joel has become strained since we last saw them on screen. They’ve been living in Jackson and while the outside world has been peaceful, their life at home hasn’t been.

Indeed, at the conclusion of the recent trailer,  we see an emotional conversation in which Ellie questions how honest Joel has been with her.

Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, reflected on where we find the two characters during a Variety press conference.

“I feel like it was a beautiful setup by Craig and Neil that the first thing that I got to shoot was just you [Bella Ramsey] and I and in kind of an intimate setting. There’s incredibly painful distance between the two of them and the playing of the scene, but we still got to be on set and laugh and stuff like that. And that was incredibly comforting, that was like coming home.”
