Lizzo was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this week and took a swipe at President Donald Trump with two different t-shirts.

The singer performed her hits Love In Real Life and Still Bad on the show, for which she wore a shirt with the word ‘Tariffied’ on it. This was in reference to Trump’s aggressive implementation of tariffs on imports from across the world, which sparked widespread concern for the global economy.

At the end of the show, which Jon Hamm was hosting, Lizzo was wearing another t-shirt reading “Black women were right.”

It’s not the first time Lizzo has made her opposition to Trump known. Last year, in the run-up to the election, she appeared at his opponent Kamala Harris’ rally and also criticised his comments about her home state of Detroit.

Trump had used Detroit as an example of what would happen to the country if his Harris went on to win the election. “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands.”

“All the best things were made in Detroit: Coney dogs, Faygo, and Lizzo,” she said at the time.

“I’m so proud to be from this city,” she said. “You know, they say if Kamala wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit. OK. Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit. We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry. So put some respect on Detroit’s name.”

Why did Trump impose tariffs?

The tariffs would impact all the companies looking to bring their goods and services into the United States.

Some of these came into play from 5 April, with the first round of Trump tariffs impacting countries like the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Meanwhile, the second batch is set to take effect from 9 April and impact what The White House calls its “worst offenders”

These typically charge higher tariffs on American-made goods entering their countries and include places like China, Japan and Taiwan.

Following the imposition of the tariffs, there was widespread worry about the uncertainty Trump has created and the impact on the global economy.

Last month, as the credits rolled, he came on stage wearing a shirt reading ‘CANADA IS NOT FOR SALE’. He then mouthed to the camera, “Elbows up,” meaning to protect yourself or fight back.

This was in reference to Trump saying he envisioned making Canada “the 51st state”.
