Will the USS Callister episode of Black Mirror become a trilogy? According to new quotes shared by those behind the scenes, a third episode could be on the cards one day.

Black Mirror season 7 recently dropped onto Netflix, featuring six brand new dystopian tales where our dependence on tech goes badly wrong.

In addition to featuring an instalment linked to 2017’s Bandersnatch, it also brought us a new instalment of a fan-favorite.

USS Callister: Into Infinity is the sixth and final episode of the new season and reunites us with a Star Trek-skewed digital world.

The story serves as a direct sequel to season 4’s USS Callister and the first official Black Mirror follow-up. The first story follows a group of digital clones trapped in a fictional space simulation created by a frustrated introvert using his co-workers DNA.

The show’s heroine is Nanette Cole, played by Cristin Milioti. After discovering she’s trapped in a fictional world created by Jesse Plemmons’ Robert Daily, she works on securing her escape.

While her mission succeeds, Cole’s clone is ultimately left trapped in a free-range version of a digital space adventure. It’s here where season 7’s sequel episode picks up.

USS Callister: Into Infinity was written by Charlie Brooker, Bisha K. Ali, William Bridges and Bekka Bowling, and directed by Toby Haynes.

Having previously worked on shows like Doctor Who and Andor, Haynes was well suited to enter Brooker’s space adventure world. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he teased that this might not be the last time he boards the USS Callister.

“Who knows? It might be completely impossible to get these people into the room again to shoot another film, and that would be very sad. But if the planets align…,” said Haynes, touching upon Into Infinity’s ambiguously open conclusion.

“I’ll always be available for ‘Callister’” says Black Mirror director

“It took a lot to make these planets align, and I have absolute faith in Jessica (Rhoads, executive producer) and Charlie in making the planets align one more time, and if they were to line up, we’ve got a fantastic premise to begin on.

“I’m praying they get it together and I see a script in a few years time, or in a year’s time,” he continued. “I’ll be down for it. I will always be available for ‘Callister.’ It’s been a dream working on it again and to work with those guys would be just fantastic.”

So there you have it. While nothing is set in stone just yet – it looks like a third USS Callister story could end up gracing our screens at some point in the future.
