Toys “R” Us played an iconic role in many children’s lives, and now the retailer is looking to capture the magic of the stores on screen with its first movie.
Confirmation that a movie based on Toys “R” Us was in early development was revealed by Variety, which said that Toys “R” Us Studios and Story Kitchen – which has had success with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies – were teaming up for the project.
This announcement is the latest movie to try and tap into the success of films based on iconic children’s toy brands. Barbie was the catalyst for this trend, becoming the biggest grossing movie of 2023. Since then, various other movies have been announced, such as one based on the Matchbox model toy brand.
What is the plot of the Toys “R” Us movie
As the project is in early development, no plotline has been officially released. But Variety reported that the movie aims to capture the sense of childhood wonder but in a modern fast-paced adventure that taps into Toys “R” Us’ brand relevance.
It has also been reported it will be in the vein of movies such as the Night at the Museum trilogy or Back to the Future.
Kim Miller Olko, president of Toys “R” Us Studios said the movie would be a “journey as boundless as play itself, evoking the electric sense of wonder that is the essence of Toys “R” Us.”

Given we are at the early stages of development, no actors have yet been linked with the project. As it moves forward, announcements will be made.
Who is behind the project
Story Kitchen is one of the companies developing the movie, and it has a reputation for adapting video games for the big screen. Its biggest successes have been the three Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Of course, there is a fourth film in the works at the moment. The company is also developing a Tomb Taider series as well as adaptations of Streets of Rage and Toejam and Earl.
When will the Toys “R” Us movie be in theaters?
Currently, no date has been given for when the Toys “R” Us movie will be released. Given it is at an early stage of development – we have no news about a script yet – then it is likely to be some time before fans get to see the movie – possibly 2027 at the earliest.
