If you’ve loved the songs in A Minecraft Movie then soon you can have the chance to sing -and meme – along to Jack Black and co in special screenings.
A Minecraft Movie has proved to be a sensation since its release, with phrases such as “I am Steve!” becoming a meme and the songs gaining popularity in the charts – Steve’s Lava Chicken made it to number 21 in the UK Top 40 and has also placed in the Billboard Hot 100.
To capitalise on this, Warner Bros is giving fans the chance to experience the movie in a more interactive way, as reported by Variety. On May 2, there will be showings across North America where fans will be encouraged to sing along with Steve’s songs or join in with their favourite moments.
Descending into chaos
These showings might be to cater for demand as there have been plenty of reports of screenings of A Minecraft Movie descending into chaos, with one fan ejected for bringing a live chicken to the theatre.
Meanwhile, venues have been forced to issue multiple warnings urging attendees to remain calm during performances and to refrain from trashing cinemas, especially during the ‘chicken jockey’ scene. When the movie opened, there was a trend among younger moviegoers of screaming and throwing their popcorn buckets when Black shouts “Chicken Jockey”.
A Minecraft Movie box office records
A Minecraft Movie, based on the classic video game, currently holds the record for the biggest opening weekend for any movie this year. The movie took $313 million at the global box office, which is also a record for the biggest opening weekend for a movie based on a video game.
Starring Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers and others, a Minecraft Movie has now taken more than $817 million across the world, which makes it the second biggest grossing movie of the year so far, behind Chinese animation Ne Zha 2, which has taken $1.9 billion.
However, A Minecraft Movie is more than $400 million ahead of the third biggest grossing movie of the year so far, Captain America: Brave New World, which took $414 million. It is also the biggest grossing movie in the US, having taken $380 million domestically so far, according to figures from Box Office Mojo.
