What is the movie Weapons about? If you’ve seen its eerie first trailer, then odds are you’ve been asking yourself this question.

The film is directed by American writer and filmmaker Zach Cregger. It’s the follow up to his critically praised 2022 horror Barbarian and is set to tell a creepy story that so far, is keeping most of its cards close to its chest.

While few concrete details surrounding Cregger’s fourth feature film have been revealed thus far, there are a few plot nuggets doing the rounds online. Together, these help shed some light on the dark tale that Cregger and his cast are cooking up.

Adding to the intrigue surrounding Weapons is its viral marketing campaign, which is currently in full swing. Earlier this month, eagle-eyed fans noticed a series of creepy clips that claim to have been recorded via Ring doorbells.

These found-footage-esque videos have been shared on social media alongside a mysterious website MaybrookMissing.net. Intrigued? Us too – but more on these later.

So far, we only have a handful of details to go off regarding the plot of Weapons. The film has been described as a “horror epic” that features “personal” elements linked to Cregger, amid all of its larger-than-life chills.

We also know that the film was partly inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 drama Magnolia. This film followed an ensemble cast to tell a number of interconnected stories following characters looking for deeper meaning in their life.

Weapons looks set to follow a similar ensemble cast led by Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan and Austin Abrams are also set to star.

Elsewhere, we have the film’s official log line which sheds a tantalisingly brief amount of light on the story behind Weapons.

“When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance,” it reads.

Plot aside, the team behind Weapons have already started planting some creepy viral marketing elements for fans to discover on their own terms.

Firstly, there are the sinister Ring doorbell clips that we mentioned above. Then there’s MaybrookMissing.net, a fake website featuring a news story that provides some additional information on the movie’s plot.

“A chilling mystery has gripped the small town of Maybrook after 17 children voluntarily left their homes Wednesday morning. Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core,” reads the article.

“Upon investigation, front door camera footage showed the children leaving their homes at 2:17 am Wednesday morning without any signs of force. Since then, little information has surfaced, and the case continues to baffle investigators.”

It continues, adding “In response, a school gathering was held, where growing unease among parents became clear. As the town struggles to understand what happened, officials continue to urge the public for any leads, while Maybrook is left waiting for answers.”
