While Stranger Things fans are getting increasingly excited about the upcoming final season on Netflix, there is now something else to look forward to – a play that acts as a prequel to Stranger Things is coming to Broadway next year.

April opening

Stranger Things: The First Shadow is coming to the Marquis Theater, with its opening night set for April next year.

The play made its debut in the West End in London in December 2023 – where it is still running – and has been a success, including winning 2024 Olivier Awards for best new entertainment or play, and for best set design.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow was written by Kate Trefry with the Duffer Brothers who created the original series – credited with the original story for the play, along with Trefry and Jack Thorne.

Back to the start

The play is set in Hawkins in 1959 and features younger versions of characters familiar to those who watch the show, including Joyce Maldonado, Bob Newby and Jim Hopper.

The plot sets out that Hawkins is a regular town, and the people have regular worries – Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob’s sister doesn’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce just wants to graduate from high school and move away. Then Henry Creel and his family arrive seeking a fresh start, but they find that the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

It also adds that was well as going right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story, it may well hold the key to the end.
