- Long-awaited sequel thrills audiences with big first weekend at the box office
- Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the number one film in many countries around the world
- Film has been noted for using old school practical effects rather than CGI

Long-awaited creepy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has entranced audiences around the world taking more than $100 million in its first weekend at the global box office.
Big opening
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which stars Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder, took $145.4 million across the world, making it one of the biggest opening weekends of the year so far.
In the US, the film took $110 million, with the remainder made up of totals from 69 markets across the world, according to figures from Deadline.
Unsurprisingly, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the number one film in the US, but also in 40 other countries around the world. This included the UK, Australia, Mexico and Latin America.
The film’s international takings will continue to grow as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has yet to be released in some significant countries including Japan, France and Germany.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been praised by critics for the script and performances, but also for its old-school approach to effects. Rather than using CGI, practical effects and models were used. This was done for several reasons. For one, it was in keeping with the original film from 1989, but also to give it a handmade feel. Secondly, it also gave the film a feel of the B movies that Burton watched as a child and he wanted it to look purposely fake and cheap, according to Keaton in an interview earlier this year.
Big grossing films
Elsewhere, Inside Out 2 continues its ascent of the table of biggest grossing films of all time. The Pixar sequel is now eighth in the all-time list, having overtaken Jurassic World. In all, Inside Out 2 has now taken $1.675 billion at the global box office.
Deadpool & Wolverine is also still performing well at the box office and has now grossed more than $1.287 billion in the seven weeks since it opened.
