  • Brolin had been eyed to play the title character in the new HBO show
  • The Dune star has previously appeared in the Deadpool and Avengers franchises as part of the MCU
  • The new HBO show will be titled Lanterns

Josh Brolin is not stepping foot back into the world of superheroes. Not yet, anyway.

The man responsible for bringing Thanos to life on the big screen in the Avengers movies, as well as Cable in Deadpool 2, will not be heading up HBO’s upcoming Lanterns as lead character Hal ‘Green Lantern’ Jordan.

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Brolin received an offer from HBO at the end of August for the role. However, the same reports have alleged that, as of this past weekend, the No Country For Old Men star had turned down the offer. No other details were made available, however.

Despite the casting setback, HBO have already attracted some high profile talent to Lanterns, with Ozark’s Chris Mundy serving as showrunner for the eight-episode series and Lost, The Leftovers and HBO’s Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof teaming up with Eisner Award-winning comics author Tom King to write the show.

Casting is still ongoing with HBO hoping to shoot between January and June of next year in Atlanta.

Brolin’s most recent foray into TV came with his starring role in Amazon Prime video’s supernatural western series Outer Range, which was recently cancelled after two seasons, despite receiving strong reviews from critics and viewers alike.

Green Lantern’s most recent standalone adaptation came in the form of 2011’s ill-fated big screen effort in which a pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds took on the Hal Jordan role alongside his future wife Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins and Peter Sarsgaard. The film was critically panned, however and was a box office failure, returning $220m against a budget of $200m.
