After months of rumors it has been confirmed that a movie based on the hugely popular video game series The Sims is in the works.

Early stage

The news was confirmed by The Sims’ publisher, Electronic Arts (EA), adding that it was working with Amazon MGM Studios on the project. In addition, LuckyChap, the production company co-owned by Margot Robbie, is also on board.

It was confirmed that Kate Herron, who directed Loki, is attached to the project. Briony Redman will be one of the writers of the movie.

EA added the project is at an early stage, saying that further updates will be provided next year.

Next year also marks 25 years since The Sims was first released. The game, where players control cartoonish characters that speak in their own language and make decisions that affect various aspects of their life, has been hugely successful since its debut.

Over the past 24 years there have been various iterations of the game released on many platforms as well as numerous expansion packs that bring in new themes and gameplay aspects. The Sims has become one of the biggest selling video games of all time, shifting nearly 200 million units.

Replicate success

This film will be looking to replicate the success of recent movies based on video game franchises such as Sonic The Hedgehog. Although not all adaptations have worked as Borderlands has recently shown – it took just over $30 million at the global box office, nowhere near recouping its production costs.

LuckyChap – which scored a huge hit with Barbie last year – is also working on a movie version of the classic board game Monopoly.
