From his Netflix stand-up specials to his excellent hair to his impeccable cameo role in The Bear, John Mulaney is an absolute delight. Although there are probably a good few people involved with Big Tech that don’t think so, right now.
The Chicago-born comedian, who recently welcomed his second child with wife Olivia Munn, was hired by Salesforce to perform a stand-up set at their Dreamforce AI conference – an event they claim is the biggest AI event in the world.
Now, despite the room being filled with people who fancy themselves as being pretty f**king intelligent, no one in attendance at Dreamforce, nor anyone in charge of the organisation of the event, appeared to foresee that John Mulaney would waste absolutely no time roasting the ever loving life out of the entire room and their industry in general.
Needless to say, the 42-year-old Saturday Night Live alumni had himself an absolute ball during his 45 minute set, drawing groans from the room and jubilant reactions from those online who discovered Mulaney’s set on social media.
According to The San Fransico Standard, Mulaney began by quipping, “You look like a group who looked at the self-checkout counters at CVS and thought, ‘This is the future.’”
That was just the beginning though, as Mulaney continued, “If AI is truly smarter than us and tells us that [humans] should die, then I think we should die. So many of you feel imminently replaceable.”
Not content with this scathing start, Mulaney added, “What’s important here is that we’re looking for solutions. And in looking for solutions, what we’re really after is insights, which then lead to success. Now, start prepping the humans for robots.
“Some of the vaguest language ever devised has been used here in the last three days. The fact that there are 45,000 ‘trailblazers’ here couldn’t devalue the title any more.”
At one point, Mulaney interacted with one attendee in the audience, saying, “You’re a VP of customer success? Congratulations on your position that did not exist five years ago!”
It’s been a very successful few days for Mulaney who, as well as hilariously bullying a room full of wealthy tech bros, also welcomed a new daughter into the world with his wife Olivia Munn. Sharing the great news to Instagram, Mulaney wrote, “Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon. We stole so much stuff from the hospital. I love my little girl so much. Méi (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese.”
Congratulations all round on a week for the ages for John Mulaney. To celebrate, go and watch absolutely anything with his name attached to it on Netflix. Then enjoy his work in the staggering ‘Fishes’ episode of The Bear season two. Book the next couple of days off work for all of that.
