After becoming a surprise box office hit this summer, director Fede Álvarez’s sci-fi sequel Alien: Romulus has revealed plans for a retro VHS re-release due out in December.

This new, limited edition release was confirmed by Álvarez during a screening of his movie that took place at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles over the weekend.

According to reports, this special physical release will be a “fully functioning VHS tape” and allow Alien fans to enjoy the latest instalment of this long-running horror franchise in an old-school 4:3 aspect ratio.

The release will also come complete with a vintage-style tape sleeve featuring brand new artwork created by illustrator Matt Furguson.

A sneak peek of his VHS cover can be seen via Furgeson’s official Instagram account below, alongside the claim that the tape will be the “first big studio VHS release since 2006.”

Limited Edition VHS release

Alien: Romulus’ VHS release will be extremely limited although exact numbers of how many tapes will be released – or how you can buy one for yourself – has yet to be confirmed.

This new release is set to coincide with the 45th anniversary of the Alien franchise which was started with filmmaker Ridley Scott’s Alien in 1979.

Starring Sigourney Weaver as Lt. Ellen Ripley, the film follows the doomed crew of the Nostromo, a space freighter that unwittingly picks up a hostile alien creature while responding to an SOS signal in deep space.

Scott’s original was followed by James Cameron’s action epic Aliens in 1986 before David Fincher took over for 1992’s Alien 3, a film that has since become infamous for its troubled production

French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jennet directed 1997’s Alien: Resurrection before Scott returned to the universe for two stand-alone prequels including 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant.
