- Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders posted the statement on social media in the wake of Kamala Harris’ defeat in the Presidential election to Donald Trump
- Sanders claims in the statement that the Democrats have abandoned the working class
- The statement has received over a million likes across social media
Bernie Sanders has garnered not only a few headlines but the attention of millions of people online with his post-election statement about the performance of the Democratic Party in their defeat to Donald Trump, this week.
Vice President Kamala Harris was unsuccessful in maintaining the Democrats hold on the White House, after Joe Biden had won the Presidency back in 2020. Instead, it was Donald Trump who emphatically swept to victory, taking both the electoral college and popular vote. Harris, meanwhile received roughly 13 million votes less than Biden did four years ago – a clear indicator of how poorly the pair had performed in the eyes of a substantial amount of Americans during their four years in charge of the United States.
And in a statement released via his official social media channels yesterday afternoon (November 6), Sanders seemed unsurprised by the Democrats defeat, despite having campaigned heavily against Trump for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.
Sanders shared his statement with the following caption attached.
“It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them. While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they’re right.”
Within the statement itself, Sanders continued, “First it was the white working class, and now it is Latino and black workers, as well,” before adding later in the statement, “Today, despite strong opposition from a majority of Americans, we continue to spend billions funding the extremist Netanyahu government’s all out war against the Palestinian people which has led to the huge humanitarian disaster of mass malnutrition and the starvation of thousands of children.”
Harris polled terribly among Muslim Americans, especially in Michigan, where Dearborn has proportionally the largest Muslim population in America. Biden and Harris’ support of Israel over the last year alienated Muslim voters, who could have helped deliver an important swing state to the Democrats.
Sanders closed his statement by saying, “Will the big money interests and well paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign? Will they understand the pain and political alienation that tens of millions of Americans are experiencing? Do they have any ideas as to how we can take on the increasingly powerful Oligarchy which has so much economic and political power? Probably not.”
Sanders, who was once again re-elected as Senator of Vermont this week, has made appearances on podcasts hosted by the likes of Theo Von and Joe Rogan, both of whom also conducted interviews with Donald Trump in the lead up to this week’s election. Kamala Harris did not sit down with either of the aforementioned, increasingly influential hosts. It is believed by many that not choosing to court a young, male audience cost Harris a significant number of votes.
Whether the words of Bernie Sanders are heeded by Democrats between now and the 2028 election remains to be seen.
