For many millennials, Tremors was the first real exposure to a monster-fueled horror-packed comedy with gorey elements. Who doesn’t want over an hour and thirty minutes of subterranean monsters rampaging through a small town in Nevada? The first film’s success sparked a few more sequels and a TV show.

The latter half, unfortunately, didn’t live up to Tremors (1990), mainly due to the absence of the original creative team.

How Is a Revival Possible?

As reported by JoBlo, the rights to the original Tremors screenplay have fallen back into the hands of lead writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, along with director Ron Underwood.

Wilson broke the news during the 2nd Annual Tremors Fest in New Mexico earlier this month.

He said, “What we have now, just got, are the rights to our original screenplay. That’s good, we can remake (Tremors) if we want to.” Upon hearing this, fans were overjoyed at the thought of their favorite horror classic returning to the big screen.

We’ve heard rumors of a Tremor’s reboot before, but they have not been fruitful. The fact that this news comes straight from the creative team behind the original gives it more credence.

Will the Reboot Be a Remake or a Sequel?

In the same conference, Wilson said, “Stampede has zero intention to do a remake of the first movie. They’re most likely going to try to make a sequel that’s set in Perfection, Nevada, with the remaining cast and crew and another Graboid threat. Marc Toberoff would love for them to pull a Prey-style approach to a sequel film.”

For those who don’t know, Perfection is a small town in Nevada that the underground monsters known as Graboids terrorize in Tremors. The monsters are eerily similar to the massive sandworms in the Dune franchise.

It’s clear that Wilson and the team are more interested in producing a potential sequel than a remake of the original. They want the location to be the same and as many of the original cast members to return. Kevin Bacon, who was the lead in the original, has also displayed interest in returning to the Tremors franchise.
