Alison Brie has joined the cast of the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie and will star as the villainous Evil-Lyn.

Brie – best known for her roles in Mad Men, Community and the LEGO Movie series – joins Nicholas Galitzine, who is playing He-Man and Camila Mendes (Teela) in the film.

Back to Eternia

The synopsis for the film was revealed earlier this year, as reported by Variety. It sees 10-year-old Prince Adam crashing to Earth in a spaceship and get separated from his magical Power Sword – which is also the only link to his home on Eternia.

But, after spending the best part of 20 years tracking it down, Prince Adam is taken back across space to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat him, Prince Adam must uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man.

Masters of the Universe, which is being made by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, is the latest big-screen adaptation of a best-selling toy line, coming in the wake of the success of Barbie. Travis Knight – best known for Bumblebee – is in the director’s chair.

Hugely popular cartoon

He-Man and The Masters of the Universe was a much-loved cartoon show back in the 1980s and had an immensely popular toy line at the time too, produced by Mattel. Figures from that era can now go for large sums on auction websites.

Back in 1987, there was a live-action movie adaptation, with Dolph Lundgren starring as He-Man, but the film was not a critical or commercial success. Since then, there have been various reboots of the cartoon franchise, but no attempt at a live-action film until now, although there have been talks about one since about 2007.
